Last weekend, the winners of the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2023 were announced in London. There were more than 4,000 contenders,. Entries from all over the world were judged on flavour. With 93 points out of a maximum 100, Rynbende’s Vintage Genever ‘The Mayor of Exploration’ was awarded the silver medal.
The International Wine & Spirit Competition is an annual event. Each year, the competition receives entries from nearly 100 countries. The industry considers the IWSC the world’s largest and most influential spirits award.
Rynbende’s Vintage Genever
Our Mayor of Exploration is based on an old recipe from Job Kramer Freher’s recipe book. The vintage genever is an ode to the glory days of the distillery and the signature flavour that set the brand apart from its competition at the time.
With help from master distiller Ad van der Lee of Herman Jansen Beverages in Schiedam, we recreated, tasted and adapted the recipe to today’s (taste) requirements, while respecting the recognisable Rynbende flavour.
When we hit on the right flavour, Herman Jansen recommended submitting the drink to the IWSC. This organisation holds an annual taste competition where a renowned 120-member expert jury judges the entries blind on taste alone. Each judge then gives his/her findings and awards points. These are collected and added up, after which winners are announced. There are various drinks categories, such as Whisky, Genever, Brandy, Liqueurs, Limoncellos, etc. The judges are given no information about brand and packageneverg – they judge purely on taste within the category.
The judges wrote the following about Rynbende’s Vintage Genever ‘The Mayor of Exploration’:
“Light peat and wood aromas with classic malt flavours. The smooth and complex taste has some delicious grain expressions, with menthol, rye and a compelling character of charred oak to finish it off.”
